Saturday May 21

Today was strange. The weather at first was sort of rainy. We waited til about 10:00 to go for our walk. This week is saint christ days. They do some strange stuff. We arrived down by the big church they have been decorating for two weeks, even while Jordan was here. The area was closed to traffic and people were walking slowly around the circle of the park. Many were crawling on their knees. Even old people.

I was trying hard not to take pictures being insensitive. They circle the park for I don’t know how long. We walked on down the ocean and then circled back. All those tables along the road are for gypsies yea gypsies to sell stuff. Mostly belts, purses, perfumes, and bed spreads.
The women mostly dress in black and wear ijads. There was one cool ice cream stand made from a volkswagon van.
There is a large parade going to happen today so motorcycles, scooters, four wheelers were all driving by to a rally point. Reving their engines and just loud. They streamed by for a long time, I had no idea there were this many of them on the island. We went home and we had lunch at a member’s house. I asked about the gypsies and it sounds like they live here on the island, but I don’t have a clue what they do the rest of the year. Then I had a meeting with the branch President to work on the membership list. It will still take a lot of work to get this done. After we finished I went home and grandma and I headed back down to see the lights. We were a bit early so we walked the streets. It reminded me a lot of the fair with all the crowds, the food vendors and the noise. During the day they had a parade where they carried the statue around the park walking on flowers.

We walked around and waited until 9:00 when they light up the place. They do it quite dramatically a little section at a time but finally all is lit up even arches above the street.

A lot of the women and girls wear dresses and while walking around taking pictures I noticed one woman I thought I recognized from her crawling this morning with bandages on her knees.
This goes on for eight days just like our fair at home. We finally headed home but there were still more people headed in than leaving. After we got home we found out why as the sound of fireworks went on for quite a while. Like I said strange behavior. We love you all.

What an interesting experience you are having. I would have never imagined the size and population of the island. For some reason it looks so small on the map 🤪 Cruise ships and gypsies, what more could you ask for…. I would take the ocean every time! Take care. Denise

The lights are so beautiful I can see why it would take so long to set up. I probably shouldn't think its funny but seeing people crawling on their knees and then showing up with bandages is funny! I love you both! Love Ashley💕
