SantarĂ©m is a city on top of a hill. All the old parts of the city and some of the new are way up on top. I think this was originally because the farms are down in the valleys and they built the forts up where they could look out over the surrounding area and to slow the bad guys down as they had to fight going up hill. This morning for our walk we drove down to the bottom of the hill and walked up. That way if we didn’t make it we could turn around and go back down easier than going all the way down and then if we had trouble still having to climb up. It was really easy though so no problem. You can see the chapel really well from most of the way up as it is in the valley in a really nice spot. We next because we had the car out checked to make sure we know the way to the interstate. The wind picked up and it blew hard all day. It was really cold especially in our apartment. The windows and doors all leak air like crazy. We spent most of the day indoors but went out once to do some shopping. The bus station is just below us and I have turned a chair around so I can sit and watch out the full height window and see all the traffic and the people coming and going. Hundreds of buses come and go. If everyone drove a car the roads couldn’t handle the traffic. We passed a tractor this morning a little bigger than mine it goes about as fast as the cars. I hope tomorrow is nicer. The one picture is of our car, one of the chapel, one coming out of the garage, one of a concrete power pole, and one of gardens. The poor people here find vacant land and plant gardens. It is wet enough that it just grows. The wall is made of rocks in fencing to hold them together just like the selway, no telling who used it first.
