Grandma Does Like a Good Cemetery

Today when we left for our walk we left intending to visit another large botanical garden. As we went to walk past the cemetery the gae was opened and so we changed our plans and visited the cemetery. As Jordan mentioned last week when I included a picture of the gate even the dead have to wear masks in Portugal.

Because grandma likes to visit graveyards I have been in a few, but nothing to compare with this one. There were modern new clean ones. Really old forgotten ones. Every size and shape just thousands. There were fields of little vertical markers for the poorer  people.

Grandma pointed out that at home an old grave is a bit over a hundred years old. Here they may be over 400 years old. In that much time they tend to accumulate.

For some reason there were a lot of cats. I caught this one in the window.

There were quite a few workers weeding and cleaning up. One guy came up and started talking to me. A really nice guy so I asked if I could take his picture.

There was a backhoe there, they are a bit different the backhoe part sets on one side of the back of the tractor instead of being in the middle. It folds across the back of the tractor flat against it instead of sticking out a long ways. This is really nice when they’re in traffic doing 30 or40 miles an hour. The cremation building is right at the back gate so they can have he funeral and cremate you right on site. That’s real service.

The cemetery was close to a mile long and when we went out the other end we headed back to the apartment. Had to take some pictures of flowers and grandma.

We were gone almost 2 hours this time. We stayed in and did some work on office stuff. It was another breezy day but nice to sit by an open window. We had a nice supper studied and we enjoyed th the balmy air. We love you all. Sorry some of the pictures are out of order, also grandma had to carve her initials in the sidewalk or was Megan Marcia here? Also when I have more than 4 pictures I use paragraph returns to mark where the pictures will go and finish loading the pictures at the church using their much faster internet. The only way to save the written text is to publish as it is and add the pictures as an update some of you are reading the text before I can add the pictures. Now I am done.

I am not surprised that the there are not markers older than 400 years. Up until a few hundred years ago they would dig up the old and forgotten and reuse plots. The bones were often fathered and buried in mass pits.

MM could be MaKenna Mecham. Hopefully Mom isn’t marking her plot at the cemetery. Cremation on an island may be a better plan than the alternative.
