Today we decided to combine several destinations into one trip. We headed down the hill towards the ocean and our first stop was at the old fort. We found out it is a museum and only open from 10am until 4pm.
Not wanting to wait around for over an hour we headed down the coast line. Turns out they have built this long sea wall making an enclosed harbor.
Along the shoreline they have built stores and restaurants and bars even an amphitheater .
It is shaped like along ship with chimneys sticking out like smoke stacks. There was a Burger King.
They have a area roped off to swim in the ocean with showers to rinse off and lifeguards and all.
There was a whale welded out of pipe by some artist.
All these pale skinned pale or red haired touristas were walking around taking pictures of everything just like us. They call where harbor opening ocean gate, cool huh?
While we were standing there a young black girl said hi to us and I started talking to her and all at once I said “you’re a Brazilian” and of course she was. She asked where I had been in Brazil and looking at my name tag if I was there for my church and I told her yes and we were here in São Miguel as missionaries also. We visited a bit and left happy. I’m trying to do better. We walked back on the other side of the street and there were all the souvenir stores money exchange restaurants tourista attractions.
Notice the paddle from a whale rib and the rooster and poupa the pig Kenna.
The farmers market was not far out of our way,
and wanting to buy some fresh food we headed there.
This time we went to the fish section. It truly does stink.
I would love to have this truck.
We bought corn on the cob, onion, cucumber, a head of iceberg lettuce (first one I have seen in Portugal), and large red tomatoes.
After purchasing a kilogram of hamburger we put it all in my pack and headed home. By the time we made it back I could feel a bit of the burn in my legs. Not as steep as the Selway but the only flat spots here are where they made parking lots and even most of them are sloped enough to be a skate boarders dream. We unloaded showered and put on missionary clothes and went to the store to buy all the heavy stuff there was no way I was going to carry up that hill. I made chili for lunch studied and even fell asleep for a while. All those fresh vegetables sure tasted good. I cooked my special sandwich we have named a “ Little Marcia”(marciazinia). Lightly toast bread spread mayo and mustard, a slice of cheddar on one slice mozzarella on the other
2 thin slices of ham butter both sides and grill cut in half on the diagonal. Served with salad and a cold guaranna.
I am a good cook, dish washer, and maid. Who wouldn’t want to talk to me on the street? Love to everyone. PS you know if grandma could get her way we would have bought the whole farmers market and I would have had to pack it home. One day at a time.

I’m sure Kenna will be tickled that you found Pua the pig, just don’t eat it! Haha!
I bet the fish market stinks! lol. Caleb would be happy to go there though. The Marcia sandwich sounds really yummy. We'll have to try it.
Sounds like so much fun! The tomatoes are huge! It all sounds yummy! Good job grandpa! cheering you on! Love you, Love Ashley!
That sandwich does look good! I think you should talk to the mission President about getting a truck. It would fit you and mom and you could use it for service! You gotta sell it to the President!
