Churches, mud pots, and forests

Monday August. 2. Today is p-day. We headed ou to visit a couple of places on my list, but one had already been visited by us although late at night and in cloudy miserable weather. This was a Catholic Church where some shepherds saw the virgin Mary and the result was a church on a very steep 10 flights of 10 stairs. The views are really nice the one picture has grandma and I standing at the top but is taken from the bottom.

Then we headed for a place called furnas(furnace) . Think the steam.vents and mud pots of Yellowstone Park. One different thing they do is place food in milk can like cauldrons and lower them into a steam vent put a metal lid over the vent and bury with dirt 7 hours later they pull it out and sell it for about $100 a plate. This is the same food we had in my blog too much food only cooked in a caldron in an oven on low heat for 7 hours. It was good as I imagine this is but maybe another time,

One elder said I wonder how hot it really is or if it just bubbles? I found a dead rat or rabbit that had found out for himself the hard way.

There are lots of trails and stairs leading to areas in the forest surrounding. One stairway of 633 steps leads to a tiny waterfall. You wander around through the trees going up and down stairs until an hour or so later you arrive at the ruins of a huge house. Built in about.1850 by an English guy for a summer home for his wife. Think Island Park on steroids. Found an old water pitcher that would have looked great on the outhouse, but it remains sitting beside the trail.

I found an old reenforced shortened milk can probably used in the steam vents to cook. Why is it that I find everything?

We parked by the left side of the lake.

We came home had a quick meal and then went with the elders to teach a lesson to a family where the 3 younger kids are not members. We have to me in a park as the mother and kids live with the grandparents who even though they are members won’t allow the missionaries to visit their home.
One last picture of grandma sitting waiting.

All in all a  good day. A little tired but good. Love you. Skye thank you for the pictures at our home on Saturday night, I look at them often and wish I could be there.

The furnas look really pretty with all the rocks! The waterfall looks beautiful, and all the greenery there is pretty, the swing with the elders looks like fun. The food sounds good. Poor rat or rabbit. Grandma and you are doing so well as missionaries. Love you both! Love Ashley!
