Today we woke up in Lisbon. The sisters all had a meeting with Sister Barcellos so we headed down to the chapel across the lawn from the temple. They had quite a nice meal afterwards.
All of us senior couples next attended the temple together, but this time it was in english. When we finished we were heading to Porto on the train. We arrived at the train to find that we were needing tickets. We tried to purchase tickets and the train was full. So we walked with our luggage back to the church. We were picked up by President Barcellos and taken to the mission home where we waited until they were ready to leave. It took a while. We got away about 6:30 local time. It was pleasant traveling with them and I was able to see areas we had visited in prior travels. It is so dry here. The temperature is extreme above 100. What a change from the island. The grass is brown and it almost appears like desert.
So we have a 3 hour drive to Porto. The sunset because of the smoke from all the fires was really pretty.
Finally we arrived at the fork in the road to Porto. There were small blazes in the grass next to the road. We went about a mile when the road was stopped by flames. President Barcellos turned around first and then everyone was turning around going the wrong way on a divided highway. Life is always an adventure for us. I bet there are people who either think we seek these adventures out or that it serves us right for getting to be on the acores. The love Sister Barcellos has for the missionaries was very apparent as before we could turn around she said we need to pray and she prayed more for the safety of the missionaries than even for ourselves.
Some are not so good but night and a moving car.
Well after considerable maneuvering we were back going the right direction on the highway bypassing Porto. We got all checked into a hotel and all is good. The whole area is smoky but nothing we can’t handle. Long interesting day. I asked grandma if she wished we could have got on the train and got to Porto without any excitement, and she said no way. We love you all.
