Friday December 17

Today it was raining so the walks were canceled. When I checked I found out that November is the wet month and December is right behind it. We had some visits to make and I had a good time playing with the little kids. A lot of the houses here are narrow and deep and maybe multiple levels they share outside walls so the windows are only in the narrow front and back. In some you walk into the front room and out a door into another room which gives access to the rest f the house. We visited one house of an older lady and the front door opened into a hallway. There was a room off of this hallway probably a bedroom due to her more limited mobility. The hall opened into a tiny living room filled to overflowing and a Christmas tree, with all these nativity figures.

The house was really dark as the lights were single bulbs. The hallway started again walking past a bathroom and into a small room with a couch on one side and a chest freezer on the other. We sat here with the couch and a few kitchen chairs. The kitchen was next full of free standing cabinets and a table along with all the other stuff like stove sink and fridge. This was a larger room not wider but longer than the others. The next room was a porch like room and must have given access to upstairs as there was a second story. For those who remember the old single wide trailer homes think of them with neighbors having houses attached on the sides and another on top. Wide tunnels. I asked her how long she had lived there and found out she had lived all her 53 years and the house had been her mothers and then her grandparents before that. Most of the people here never leave the island and many have never visited other parts of the island. They have become accustomed to the world they can see walking. Sorry if I spent too much time explaining about the house but I like seeing how well people adapt and even thrive here. We headed to the town of fish tail and while waiting at the door noticed some unique Christmas decorations in  the store across the street.

The nativity set is made of that fake fur and the tree is those flowers hydrangeas the flower balls stacked and painted. Kind of neat. We had choir practice tonight. If it wasn’t so funny it would be hard to take. None of us would be asked to sing in a choir if there were others to choose from. A couple should be sure and only sing when alone and where others won’t have to hear. But it actually is fun and good language practice. We ran a couple of members home and on the way home stopped to take pictures of a Christmas display at a house.

This blog turned out longer than expected with the things we did not seeming to be of much interest. We had a good day and other than not walking things went well. We love you all.

Lack of transportation a car would limit your ability to travel very far so I see living in the same spot your whole life probably don't have access to news TV or radio depending on economic status phones what do the people have

I love all the pictures of decorated Christmas trees and nativities. They are all different and beautiful in their own unique way. Marcia is wonderful accessory! We wish you a very merry Christmas. Love, —Denise—

I enjoy hearing that people have lived in the same city for generations and live in their grandparents home. Heritage and culture are important to all people, thanks for bringing that into perspective.

I love that nativity in front of the house that glows, now that is cool. The nativities in the windows look a little weird, especially the ones that look like they're made out of hair. I Love you guys! Love Ashley!
