Monday February 21

It’s p-day. Another beautiful day. We got up and made preparations to cook the food in the steam vents near ribeira grande. We finally got away and soon we were putting the food in the ground. We couldn’t find the hooks to lower the pan in so we used twine tied to the handles.

Now it needs time. We went and visited a local lighthouse. We have been here before but it still is pretty.

Just down the road is another place of interest. Grandma and I visited here once before but it was really raining. You hike down a steep road to th ocean. At the start of the hike there are bamboo staffs everywhere we made some nice walking sticks. When we arrived at the water it is an ancient site where they processed whales. There is a really rusty old steam winch which would have been used to drag the whale up the rock ramp. There are steps carved in the stone old iron rings still anchored in the ramp.

I walked out where it seems some people fish. I found lots of fishing line and one hook. Attaching these to my bamboo pole all I need is bait.
We headed back to where the food is cooking. Leaving the missionaries to throw a frisbee around grandma and I drove around the bend in the road and checked out the comercial side. They have some hot springs and a restaurant where they sell food cooked in the steam vents.

Soon it was time to eat the food. We had beef, potatoes, carrots, and onions. All flavored with salt pepper, and garlic. Trying to do it somewhat like they do here we placed a length of sausage on top.

The food was good. We had burnt sugar cake for desert and after cleaning up went home. It took a bit of work but I soon had all the dishes washed and everything put away. Hunter called and we had a nice visit. We received news that the mother of one of the missionaries who was here with us in October and November had died. Before Christmas she was in the hospital because along with other difficulties she had covid. Two months later she died. For our mission wide zoom meeting it dealt with this. We had another meeting with the other senior missionaries then ate and stayed in. Although I really didn’t do much I was tired. We had a lot of fun. We love you all.

That's a beautiful area you were in. That looks like a fun way to cook a meal and it all sounds delicious. How long does it have to cook for? Love you both! Love Ashley!
