Wednesday November 10

Today is a travel day. We needed to be at the airport as close to7:00 as possible so we left at 7:00. People here are always late but the planes never are. We dropped grandma off with the luggage and I went to show them where to park. The elder driving unlike me was not born to drive in Portugal and missed the turnaround we needed because he hesitated. This meant a 5 minute drive to the next turnaround and back to park. Ob well. We got our boarding passes and our bag checked then up to wait in the lounge. We only had a half hour to wait before boarding. A couple were on the same plane with surf boards you don’t see that every day.
The flight to Lisbon was much better than usual. Soon we found ourselves at the mission office headed out to lunch. We had a great lunch at a brazilian restaurant then back to the office. Lots of missionaries were arriving and it was interesting to talk with them. The time change here on the continent had it getting dark an hour earlier for us. We were dropped off at our hotel and after checking in grandma and I set out for dinner and a walk. We know the area already so we headed for the huge shopping mall about a mile from our hotel. Before we got there you could see it was really lit up.

We went in and started walking all the levels. One level goes out and connects the subway, on the upper two levels is all restaurants and fast food places. Then on the other levels everything else. The center is a big opening through all the levels and there are bridges crossing it. It was really decorated for Christmas and kind of amazing.

We ate at a kfc. And then walked some more. After spending time on são miguel where it seems everything is back in time Lisbon seems almost too modern. They don’t celebrate thanksgiving here as it is an American holiday, but I did notice they celebrate Black Friday.
I am sure we will get this back on the island also. We walked around a little then left for our hotel, just a few more pictures.
Walking back everyone seems to be in a hurry. There is more traffic here on our walk back than we see on he entire island in the five months we have been here. It is great to visit, but … we arrived back unpacked and rested. Interesting day . We love you all.

I keep getting questions of why the cruise ships come and what the people do while here. Most only stay one day. A lot of the people get on buses and do tours of the scenic places you can visit without walking. I think they are here to be on a cruise.

Why do they celebrate Christmas there then? I love the decorations, they look magical, and the outside of the building all lit up is amazing. Grandma looks good in the top picture with all the luggage and the Elders. Love you guys! Love Ashley!

I loved the pictures of the mall. It seemed to be such a unique structure. The lights made it so festive. Having Black Friday without celebrating Thanksgiving seems weird but I guess that time when you’re finally making a profit is universal. It is also good advertising. 😁 Enjoy Lisbon. Love you guys. —Denise—

I can see why you feel Lisbon is more Modern than the Azores…it’s probably fun to come back to the city once in awhile!
